Ocular Migraine

Definition: Ocular migraines are described as abnormal visual sensations. People with a history of classic migraines are most often fall its prey. Head pain sometimes follows ocular migraines.

Signs and Symptoms: A small, shimmering spot near the center of your field of vision may be noticed by you when an ocular migraine begins. In the beginning, it may appear to you that something is not quite right with your vision. However, you will come to know the truth within a few minutes when the spot expands and you may become aware of a distinct visual abnormality accompanied by patchy vision loss, typically affecting both eyes. The shimmering area may also be bordered by colored or silvery zigzag light patterns. Outer part of the visual field eventually gets affected by the expansion of this zigzag pattern. It usually takes 15 to 30 minutes for the visual abnormality to travel far out into the side vision and then disappear.

Causes:

What causes ocular migraine is not known. However, abnormal stimulation of nerve cells known as neurons at the back of brain is through to be the main cause of ocular migraine. Ocular migraines, like classic migraines, have a propensity to occur repeatedly, but irregularly. Several ocular migraines may be experienced by you within a week and then for months or even years you may not have any. Before the start of an ocular migraine, some people have heightened sensitivity to sound or light.

Treatment:

Usually, ocular migraines require no treatment. On the other hand, your doctor may recommend some medications for headache relieve, if they often follow migraines.
